When you've had your fill of the bright lights and buzz of Las Vegas, enticements of a completely different nature await.  So kiss the Elvis impersonator goodbye, grab your camera and hit the Nevada highway.

Within a half hour -- a mere 17 miles west -- you will step into an existence as far removed from the Vegas Strip as you can get.  Gone is the glitz.  And the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert -- specifically the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area -- will surround.

The best way to explore the park is by foot.  More than 30 miles of hiking trails, with names such as Ice Box Canyon and Keystone Thrust, are available.  The 13-Mile Scenic Drive is another good option.  Keep your ...
