Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s excellent sophomore gymnasts Sawyer Gorman, left, and Jaci Newman have the Panthers doing big things again this season.

Dynamic duo perfect fit for PI/ZM

Jaci Newman is relieved to be done with physical education classes. They’ve practically been her undoing as a Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa gymnast.

No kidding.

First it was a jammed finger suffered while playing basketball in phy-ed. That happened last year, just before her conference gymnastics meet and setting her back. Then there was this past September, with Newman trying to catch a football in the same class. That also didn’t go well. Newman jumped to make the catch, then landed awkwardly, badly spraining her ankle. It’s only now starting to feel close to 100 percent.
