Prairie Island Indian Community preps for floodwaters

PRAIRIE ISLAND

A few feet can make all the difference.

Schyler Martin, emergency management coordinator for the Prairie Island Indian Community, said that right now the island is not in danger. But as the snow melts in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota along the basins of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers, the amount of water rushing toward the island reservation could be historic.

“I know that we have planned for the worst,” Martin said. “We plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

The best would be a slow melt of the snowpack that stretches across northern and central Minnesota and Wisconsin. ...
