Trans Day of Visibility: Three locals discuss the importance of being 'out'

Sunday is Transgender Day of Visibility. And while transgender issues have been hotly contested in politics in the last few years, there is plenty of work to do on the subject of awareness, three Rochester residents say.

Stephan Sommer, 27, said the day of visibility is important because it lets trans people know they’re not alone.

Before a coworker at Mayo Clinic came out, Sommer didn’t know it was possible to be a transgender man, as the only depictions he’d seen in movies and TV were of women.
